Split long exposure

Hi forum,

I live near sea and there is quite importante tides and I was thinking of playing with the tides and long exposure.
My first tought was to do some double exposure, one at low and one at high tide but this seems like a complicated task, or I need to be really, REALLY patient.

My other tought was to a long exposure like 1 hour or more and split it in 4 exposure of 15 minutes with a gap of 30 between each.
Is this a possible thing to do ? How do I take into account the light change, I meter and underexpose for 4 stops ?

You might look at this thread on Multiple or Fragmented exposures.

it's not so simple because 4 15 min exposures doesn't add up to the same as one hour :D Too long exposures will also just render sea like mist. Have a look at the John Blakemore video Martin-f5 added.
