The journey through old negatives not present in my workbooks continues.

Right about Christmastime in 1998, I drove to the northern reaches of Wisconsin to spend a few days photographing prior to my family joining for a bit of skiing. This part of the US gets a lot of snow courtesy of Lake Superior, but it is far enough north that it also can get VERY cold.

If memory serves, these were taken on days between -30C and -35C or thereabouts. The bellows on the camera were quite stiff. I took the first whilst standing mid-chest in snow, thankfully well prepared and attired to do just that.

As always, constructive critique is welcome...

(I did manage to expose a couple sheets of 3x2 HP5+ today in my "Baby" Speed Graphic, so new work proceeds as well.)

Very nice. I especially like the first one, you don't often see snow looking like that in b&w. Very dramatic.

Thanks! The texture of the snow was probably because there had been a heavy snowfall that landed on the ice and then was sculpted by the wind. This became more visible with the backlighting.

I remember seeing the scene and hoping I'd capture it because it was miserably cold in the very late afternoon and I was standing in deep snow with the tripod ;)
