Portraits

Love this. Nicely lit and posed. My only quibble would be that it would be nice to see just a hint of texture in the dress and by the face in shadow side. But - as always - no way to tell if this is innate in the image or a reproduction artefact.

Yes there are subtle details in the shadows.
 
It IS lovely. Shows a little dark on my screen too. I can see some texture in her hair and the shoulders of her dress, but not very much.

This is the curse of digital reproduction. Unless all our monitors are calibrated to the exact same gamma, contrast, brightness, colour space, etc., we won't experience the same image the same way...

I copied the image as delivered above and fiddled with it in GIMP and there is, indeed, texture detail in that dress, though, again, for my taste a bit more exposure and local contrast there would help make it more visible.

But these are nits. It's a lovely portrait.

I'll definitely cut devt time to get more details in the shadows...

 
Development of neg or print? Perhaps a touch more exposure of the neg would give more headroom in printing the low tones
I rather like that silhouette effect, so you might be able to pose your model to give expressive and interesting outlines.

Thanks David for your comment. It is a neg scan and yes a bit more exposure would have been good.
Next time I'll take more care about the silhouette effect to include it completely.
 
May I make another comment? I would keep quiet if this was’t already excellent. The cut-off point of the torso seems a little awkward. I tried scrolling the image downwards to hide the last few millimetres and the composition seemed stronger. Perhaps you wanted to keep that interesting boomerang-shaped highlight. I realise that this would alter the overall proportion and if you’re making a series that might be undesirable. Please ignore all this if you disagree.

Yes I agree on the fact that framing is not 100% satisfying for the lower part, and your suggestion is welcomed. I'm still in the lower part of the learning curve for large format photography :).
 
Love the level of detail all over this one.
Can see that your composition has come direct from the camera - no cropping on the scan. I'm full of admiration and hope I can one day come even close to this.
Also agree with above about the framing

I find the images too contrasty, that may be the film and development.

For my taste the contrast is OK because it matches with the attitude of the sitter ("strong man"), but I understand somebody may not agree.

This is a really fine image, both seen and expressed. Whether it is too contrasty is a matter of taste not quality of execution. To my eye, the highlights need to come down just a tiny bit so that the fingernails are not so distracting, but it's a very small nit. Really, really, fine work.
 
It looks about right to me. Yes, the nails are competing, tonally, with the eyes, but that’s easily dealt with. Well done.
