Hi peeps.

Hope everyone is good. I wanted to asked if any who owns the nikkor 90mm sw 4.5 could share a picture of the ground glass so I could see how brighter the ground glass is compared to my nikkor 90mm sw f8 indoors. Actually even the rodenstock 90mm 4.5

Really really like the rendering of the nikkor lens, interestingly it’s different to my FUJINON 135mm. I’ve a wista vx with the 2in1 ground glass and fresnel glass.

Cheers

Aaron.

I've got the 90mm F4.5, I can take a photo of the GG and compare it with my 65mm Super Angulon F8 which should give you an indication of the brightness boast, which should be considerable. The F4.5 should be over 3 times brighter. Will probably be able to do that tomorrow but don't hold me to it!

Truly appreciate it Jonathan

Comparing a 90/4.5 to a 65/8 will be meaningless in terms of seeing what a 90/8 looks like, not least because of the increased falloff but also because of the real aperture hole sizes. A 90/8 always looks brighter than a 65/8.

I agree Dave, a better option is just compare the 90mm f4.5 at full aperture with it stopped down to f8. The 65mm f8 Super Angulon is not the easiest lens to focus when there's a Fresnel involved.

Actually that makes a whole lot of sense! Sorry my brain is fogged due to too much work today! I'm giving the spreadsheets a break for the rest of the day.

There will be a significant difference, f4.5 is just short of 2 stops brighter than f8, by a third of a stop. It's like stopping a standard 135mm or 150mm f5.6 lens to almost f11.

I was half in between doing something and mid read 65mm for 90mm.

Yes the 65mm will look darker. Very much interested in how the 90mm 4.5 looks. I just shot with my 135mm with strobes then put the 90mm on and it’s truly a struggle. No drama. I’ll just have to see the difference and make a decision.

lol I fully get you Jonathan. I was like this on the weekend. I was busy dong stuff and I totally forgot about purchasing a nikkor 210mm 5.6. It’s now gone

Your help is appreciated.

FWIW a 90/4.5 will look loads brighter on the GG compared to a 90/8. It’ll still look dark compared to a 5.6 150 or 135 though. I don’t think you’ll really know if it’s bright enough for your purposes indoors without trying one out for real to be honest. Another angle to take is just get an additional light for focussing (or one of those builders LED lamps from screwfix!).

What a great idea Dave !!!

Taken at the same exposure on manual, quite a difference apparent here.

Appreciate this Jonathan. Yes you can see a difference. The hot spot is brighter and larger as well as the edges being slightly brighter. I take it you have a ground glass and fresnel combo screen? Chamonix I’m thinking.
I like The translucent grid lines. My only gripe with the glass over my gg and fresnel is the grid lines are solid black and sometimes if I’m trying to focus on the eye Lashes of subject it can get in the way.

I think I need to get the 4.5 and the led work lights that Dave suggested. I’ve a feeling with my wista ground glass it will be much much better with me using modeling lights of strobes as well as the LEDS.

Now finding one in the uk lol.

Make sure the rear lens group can pass through the lens board opening in the camera as I'm sure there were some fastish larger wides that would not fit the Chamonix.

Hey monsta,

the only way to try is either find a seller close enough to me or just try and buy. None are in the UK so i probably have to purchase from Japan .

I have seen a rodenstock 90mm 4.5 but its shutter speed goes to 1/400th, I presume it’s a larger shutter compared to the nikkor 90mm 4.5. When I purchased my FUJINON 135mm 5.6 the seller allowed me to try a 105mm f8. It was massive but still fit the camera. It was very heavy though.

The rear element of the nikon 90/4.5 is only 70mm wide, so should fit through a chamonix or any normal field camera taking Technika boards with ease. Same story with the super angulon 90/5.6 and the bigger grandagon 90mm too. I think it is only really the 90mm SAXL that has that huge rear element that causes problems.

What if you're using center filters?

As a Centre ND filter is a neutral density filter, typically needing1.5 stops so will make the situation worse.

A more common 90mm f4.5 wide angle lens, here in the UK, is the Grandagon-N, the rear cell has the same 70mm diameter as the Nikon.

I don't think this has a fresnel, it is a Toyo 45AII. The screen at the front and the rear is smooth. I've got a fresnel somewhere that I could try on it.

I wouldn’t say no Jonathan. It looks like the people who bought the nikkor 90mm 4.5 kept hold of them as they rarely pop up on sale here in the uk.
