Arca plate for Sinar P2

I have just started to use my Sinar but so far I’m not happy with the connection to my tripod head. It’s an Acratech ball head.

I used a Wimberley 80mm plate I had going spare but as it is quite thin it doesn’t seem as stable as I suspect a larger, wider plate would be. So far I haven’t managed to locate a square plate with an Arca fitting.

What are people using on the P2s?

Hope you can help

Thanks a lot

Gareth

Sinar P2 on a ball head... Wouldn't a proper 3-way head be better?

Thanks for the feedback. Quite possibly a 3 way will be better. Was just trying to make use of what I already have before spending a other load of cash.

Even if I buy an Arca cube I will still need a plate to mount the camera on the quick release so will still have the same dilemma to some extent.

Does anyone have a photo of how they are attaching a 5x4 camera to an Arca cube?? I have an option to get one at a not too crazy price but would still have the issue of how to mount the camera to the quick release head on the cube.

Hope someone can help!!

Thanks in advance

See Ben Horne's blog. He uses one and has some kind of sturdier plate.

Later:| He lists all his kit. Here's the tripod section.

Thanks again for this. I had already been looking at Ben’s excellent site and videos for some time. His Arca Seiss camera fits directly onto his Arca Cube so he’s not got the same problem I have.

The base of the Sinar mount is 75mm diameter but it is not flat, it has a large recess. My standard 38mm wide Arca plates only run across the midde of it rather than giving support over the full width of the large base which means it is not as solid as it should be.

Been scouring the web for something suitable but not joy so far other than buying an old pan and tilt head with a large flat top or trying to source a Sinar pan and tilt head. Only seen a couple of fairly shabby examples so far.

I might try to get a plate cut which goes between the plate and the base so that the load is spread evenly.

If you go to the link and scroll down to the bottom, you'll see the plate he uses for his Intrepid 10x8. It looks very sturdy to me.

It's been a while since I was on here but thought I should update the thread now I found a solution of sorts.

Whilst looking for something else I found an old Hasselblad Arca Swiss plate in a drawer which was pretty much the correct measurement across the diagonal. As the top of the plate was pretty much flat and the genuine Arca plates are really thick and strong it worked perfectly. Really pleased with it :)

The non genuine arca plates for 35mm cameras etc are very thin which was why the P2 was wobbling around on my Cube. Now it is spot on.
