My Toyo 45A has, what appears to be, a 1/2 inch tripod thread. I've never seen a 1/2 inch tripod thread before. I'm looking for an adapter to convert it to 3/8 inch but can't find one. Anyone ever seen such an item? It does have an adapter for 1/4 inch already in it.

Such things may exist , this is one I found searching eBay. Mover seen or used one and the thread may be wrong , ideally a Toyo manual or accessory list would tell you the thread pitch

Thanks for that. But the 1/2 inch side has the wrong pitch. That is 13 tpi and the camera has 20 tpi.

From the Toyo manual, the cameras were originally supplied with both 3/8 and 1/4 adapters. The 1/4 is fine to use, it's not a heavy camera, but I would have prefered to use a 3/8 if I could.

The way the manual reads the camera is normally fitted with a 1/4" adaptor, but could be supplied with the 3/8" adaptor. And then you can unscrew the one, and screw in the other,

Another for Brian Kumar.

The manual I have says both were supplied with the camera but, inevitably, the 3/8 one would have been rarely used and then lost.

Would Toyo provide a 1/4" connection if it wasn't strong enough?

My 10x8 Agfa Ansco cameras all have 1/4" tripod threads, as does my 12"x10" field camera, there are no issues with stability.

3/8" (or a metric equivalent) was used by many pre-W2 German camera manufacturers, but it was also used for heavy LF and professional 35mm cinematography cameras, also broadcast cameras.

Probably not, but strength isn't necessarily the issue. Depends what you want to mount it on. I have a head with a 3/8 screw I would like to use.

Like you, I have a really nice big tripod that is a fixed 3/8" screw thread. It's actually an Australian made tripod for old TV broadcast cameras. It has a sort of large ball head that the centre column sits in. The stability of a heavy tripod but allowing you to pan or tilt while filming. I've had the tripod for 20 years, but no current LF camera that can use the 3/8" tripos screw.

The remedy in my case is make a new tripod block for my 10x8 Agfa Ansco and add a 3/8" tripod socket, I'm planning to make one anyway for one of my other 10x8 Agfa Ansco cameras, before I sell it.
