David, it’s certainly true that there wouldn’t be much textured detail in the lid of that piano, but IMO the photographer purposely chose to render that lid black to emphasize the shape. It’s the shape that’s important. And, no there is no texture in the white walls, either.
 
I had never seen the Stravinsky portrait until I read the recent posts in this thread. To me, the photographer has very carefully chosen his angle so that the piano lid resembles a musical note in the written form, which would, of course, be solid black.

There are other little compositional things, like the angle of S's arm and the angle of the strut.
Have you seen the original full-frame version? It shows almost the whole piano and the whole of Stravinsky on his stool, some ceiling cornice and a very awkwardly posed other arm. To be honest, a very dull picture. The cropping creates a masterpiece and the large format neg makes the severe crop possible without critical loss of quality.
