Hi,

Planning ahead, I may be soon in a place where I can self-process 5 x 4 negs, but not scan (story later).

To decide on what to pay for enlarging I thought about proofing like I have done with 35 mms in a Patterson frame.

Does anyone have/know of a frame? Or would a FIT cardboard template be my better option?

Thoughts appreciated.

Robert

Paterson make a frame called the Pro Proofer and Copy Frame. Clear glass top sheet unlike the 35mm and 120 ones that have the plastic negative holding strips. About £80 new unless you can find one used. That is what I use. I suppose you could get a local glazier to cut a piece of plate glass to size but you would also need the corners rounding and the sharp edges ground off for safety.

For this sort of purpose, at this sort of size, any old 10x8" photo frame will do you fine. No need for a proper split-back contact frame or anything fancy.

A lot of photo frames come with acrylic instead of glass so beware. Also, some photo frame glass can be on the thin side. You'll need a good weight to the glass to hold the film down flat under its own weight. I recommend using glass larger than the paper you plan to use to avoid lines around the edges. 12x10 is good for 10x8 paper. I use tape to create a hinge for the glass against the base board.

I just use a sheet of thick glass with smoothed off edges. I think the paterson contact printing frame should be OK for your purpose as well.

I never liked the Paterson contact frames with the marks for 120 or 35mm lines, and I wanted to contact print 8x10, so I just removed the lines by washing the glass with washing up liquid and a dish-washing sponge.
