Bit of a backstory here. Prior to 2008, I only printed large prints and mounted them on matte board. This was both expensive and limited how many prints I made - I tended to self-edit to limit the amount of post production work I'd have to do.
Starting in 2008, I started producing 8x10 "workbook" prints as I went along. These are not intended for exhibition. Some are decent, others are examples of failed experiments. None are mounted and are only resident in photographic books for future reference. Most importantly, this encouraged me to print a lot more, thereby creating a fuller record of my work.
In 2009, I decided to start at the beginning of my negatives (1971) and review heretofore unprinted work I wanted added to the workbooks. This week, I just finished that effort. So the workbooks not only cover 55 years of shooting, but something between 4-10,000 negatives (I never counted
From here on out, only new incremental work need be added.
For me, the workbooks represent a travelogue, photographic experimentation, an arc of (hopefully) improving image making, and a personal history. I heartily endorse this sort of thing for people to do, but don't wait until you have thousands of negatives
