Ok it sounds silly but having got back from holiday last month my other half kindly unpacked the cases and hid my hard drive somewhere which had all my digital photos on it and that doesn't really worry me as it will turn up sometime when I'm not looking for it.

What really has me puzzeled is the film photos that I took have litterally disappeared too. I don't mean that I've lost the negatives because the negatives are still here but the actual photo has gone from them.

I stored them in a new notebook as I don't have any fancy packets for them and I did the same with my paper negatives.

The paper negatives are fine but my film photos have litterally disappeard. There is still a tiny bit of photo on one edge and something strange along another edge but I can't work out what has happened.
There is no visible marks on the notebook.
Any help or advice would be gratly appreciated86.JPG84.JPG

Must be a combination of chemicals used in the manufacture of the notebook's paper and perhaps issues with fixing/washing. I know I have some negatives that have been stored in a notebook for over 28 years with no issues like this.

It is an odd one though. It's known that older types of mount board can damage B&W prints over a period of time, hence the use of archival/museum boards.

I guess ithas me completely baffled must be something like that but they have only been in the book for a month - has me completely baffled the MF films I developed and rolled back into their original paper on the spool and they seem to be fine so I guess it must be the notebook paper but I can't see why it wouldn't affect the paper negatives too

Just look at the list of chemicals used in paper manufacture., many would be detrimental to an image. You need to get some proper negative sleeves.

All I can suggest is by way of an analogy with bleaching a print before toning or a negative before intensifying. You might try to re-develop one or two of them, but I don’t want to raise your hopes in any way at all
As Ian says, you do need to invest in some proper storage. It doesn’t need to be the most expensive version.Just in case, you might look at your fixing and washing procedures. I really don’t know, but could it be over-used fixer?
I think you will have everyone’s sympathy.

It was new fixer so I know that wasn't the issue and the 120 film I developed in the same stuff at the same time is fine - I'll get some glassine pockets for them this week. It is only the negatives I put in that notebook that have vanished so I know it isn't the developer or fixer I'm using but I certainly wasn't expecting this. What do other folks use for storage? justt in case I'm getting the wrong thing

I use Printfile negative sleeves. You can contact print through them under a sheet of glass.

I am only guessing here, but were they undelveloped in the notebook and have they gone through an x-ray scanner

No they were definitely developed -then stopbath and fixer and inspected before storing in the notebook, No scanner went near them as we travelled by ferry and they were in the car. I've ordered some proper sleeves for the next and remaining negatives that weren't on holiday so I hope never to have this problem again. I think Ian has the answer in the paper chemicals althugh it is interesting that the paper negatives havent been affected, However I won't be using a notebook for storage ever again
