How do I know when a developer is spent ?

Hi, and thank you for your very informed, ranging, information and experiences in answering my question. I'm a few weeks along on my learning and have now shot, developed and printed some 5x4" Fomopan 200 and I'm feeling a little less overwhelmed by the many many variables. More importantly I think, I'm embracing the journey and especially the differences between digital and analogue outcomes. Good to have found you !

Yes, indeed. A good deal of LF “difficulty” melts away as soon as you get your hands on things. For some reason the authors of LF textbooks seem determined to be intimidating.
That’s not to claim that there are no difficulties; there’s always something more to learn, but only if you need it.

I rather see film and paper developing like cooking: There is a prescribed recipe and then variations thereof. There are also accidents - both happy and disastrous.

N.B. It is critical to remain clear on whether you are cooking darkroom chemistry or food. While some food components are quite useful in darkroom work (ascorbic acid, caffeine...), the reverse is decidedly untrue ;)
