Hello David,

thank you for the sentiment, truly much appreciated. I'd love to stay, but frankly I don't feel like I can be part of a forum where people slandering other people's business and livelihood are given free rein and are allowed do so without any consequences, not even having their slandering posts moderated - and that even despite having been reported repeatedly.

Short of signs that the forum is actually a place where such actions are not condoned and are sanctioned as they deserve to be, I am afraid I won't keep posting here. You'll find me on the Large Format Forum and on Photrio, where moderation exists that keeps people like Ian Grant (who is also stalking me there, for those of you who did not know) is not allowed such freedom of insult.

Yes, I seem to have seen an half-hearted attempt at an apology, where IG mentioned to have deleted his post - which he actually didn't, he just replaced a libellous and slanderous post with one which is simply rude.

No need to worry though, it's OK. I am pretty sure that anyone reading this thread is very clear on what happened. Pity, I was looking forward to contributing to this forum.

@Vieri As someone with "only" 50 years of monochrome shooting and printing experience, I can say without reservation that your work is finely crafted, well seen, and well realized. It is not exactly to my taste, but the depth of vision, care for the subject, and quality of execution is quite evident. Well done, I say.

I have quietly watched this thread from the shadows (so to speak) as someone who underwent much the same treatment here some years ago by IG, who then followed me over to Photrio to pursue a course in being internationally unkind until the mods there told him to knock it off.

As @Joanna Carter suggests (I am paraphrasing), it's breathtaking that anyone with even an ounce of civility would allow themselves to stoop to this level of interaction with complete strangers - strangers who share the same passion for photography and a love of fine art. It shouldn't take a moderator to stop this, self control and adult manners should have prevented it in the first place.

But I wouldn't take it all that seriously because ...

  • The relative anonymity of the medium has caused more than one person to develop defective internet personae even though they may be otherwise fine folk IRL (in real life).
  • As you rightly point out, you're not doing the work for anyone but yourself. We share our work out of joy, and potentially to hear constructive input. Destructive input can be safely ignored.
  • We never know the other forces in other people's lives that shape their behaviour, particularly on the internet. Who knows what else is going on here that might explain the nastiness. I prefer to give our friend the benefit of the doubt.

In short, I encourage you to say here, raise the level of play, and simply ignore the occasional schoolyard bullying.

P.S. Fairness compels me to note that IG has made many fine contribtions here and elsewhere bringing a rather wide body of knowledge to bear on all thing viz analogue photographic. I have directly benefited from his observations as I would expect you might as well.

With respect, I'd suggest that exactly what you ought not do. Art is for the artist and the sharing of it is for the joy of the thing.

There will always be the peanut gallery carping away about everything one does, but avoid them gives them too much power. Better to share your joy and ignore the detractors, methinks.

I, for one, would be delighted to see more of your work.

That's very kind of you to say so. Unfortunately, our new LF work is virtually non-existent as we have found digital techniques that can, to some extent, replace movements. What is more, when we can easily print at A0 size, (84cm x 119cm) from a 46Mpx Nikon D850 file, we have given serious thought as to whether we dispose of our analogue gear.

But then we do like to bring out the "beasts" and fondle them from time to time. After all, it was an LF workshop that rescued us from the hell that was trying to enlarge 35mm film to anything reasonable. And there really isn't anything to touch the "experience" of handling an LF camera.

We have now invested in a Canon A2 printer and, using Canson Baryta paper, we are turning out prints at every bit the same quality as those we can get from a Lambda print from the likes of Harman or Picto. We have 24" x 36" Lambda prints on our walls and we have A2 Canon prints. I defy anyone to tell which is which;)

So, in some ways, we are still practising LF, just learning and using a different skill set. What is more, we simply don't have the room to show off our really large prints :(
