I’ve been browsing the discussions here for a little while, admiring the incredible patience, craft, and detail that goes into the work shared on this forum. I am completely new to large format photography and am hoping to learn the ropes from the wealth of experience you all have.
My daily background is actually on the exact opposite end of the spectrum—I work entirely in the digital tech space. Over the past few years, I’ve been developing and experimenting with different digital workflows to assist in the creative process. For example, I recently put together an Image to Image AI project. I initially started using it to pre-visualize complex lighting setups and test composition ideas quickly before committing to a final concept.
Working primarily as an ai image creator, I realized how useful it can be to sketch out ideas digitally. Sometimes I use these systems as a basic ai image editor to adjust tonal values on reference shots, or apply photo to photo ai transformations to see how a specific landscape might render under completely different weather conditions. While it is a fascinating digital space, working purely behind a monitor has left me craving something more tactile, deliberate, and physical.
That is exactly what drew me to large format. The idea of slowing down, calculating front and rear movements, and capturing an image on a physical sheet of film is incredibly appealing to me right now. I am currently looking into getting my first 4x5 field camera and trying to wrap my head around the Scheimpflug principle before I make the jump.
