Hello all, i have just tested a new very old C. Burr 9 inch petzval. Loving the look this old lens is giving. Foma 100 on 5x4 in rodinal.

It doesn't seem as swirly as my Petzval which is un-named and about the same focal length, or typical example photos you see. They do improve with stopping down but I'm assuming you used yours wide open as the DOF is very shallow..

My own Petzval came from a box stored in a barn via a Flea market and was exceedingly filthy but cheap, however it cleaned up very well. It had been mounted and sold as an enlarger projection lens, but was made as a taking lens with the slot etc for Waterhouse stops. The switch in demand to the newer RR lenses killed the market for Pettzvals so some manufacturers sold them off a enlarger lenses, with a few still being sold as Portrait Petzvals, like yours.

Nice image.

If i used it on 5x7 then it would swirl more, on 5x4 then it is using the sweet spot of the lens. Cheers for the info.
