I am the world's worst people photographer so I'm always interested in how people do this sort of work. In this case, how do you meter and place the exposure for darker skin tones?

Spot measurement and then reduce exposure by one stop?

Essentially, there is no difference in metering for different skin tones. When flash metering with studio lights such as the bowens you actually measure thelight that reaches the subject, not the light the subject is bouncing back.
