Unauthorised use on an image on a website

Hi All
Once upon a time I used to make a living (well almost) out of taking photos.
and I have just stumbled across an image of mine on a website.
It's not very large but I suppose that's not the point as I certainly did not license it for use.
I am minded to send the user a bill for a license fee but I have no idea how much to charge.
Has anybody 'here' ever done this and if so how did they determine how much to ask for.

I've had this happen quite a few times, not just photos, artwork as well. One was a Minister in the US who had used artwork for his family genealogy website, he'd inverted the artwork to negative, he apologised it was not a commercial website, he used the original with a credit and link to my website with permission. I've resolved things on each occasion usually with profuse apologies from the users.

If it's a commercial website use the Internet Archive to see how long it's been used, then send a punitive invoice, more than you might have charged with permission.

I have stories about this from the commercial side - there are some very scammy operators claiming copyright of images that they do not truly own. (If a work was created 'For hire' the creator usually does not own the copyright) Also images where they have have subsequently purchased the right to enforce copyright.
My advice would be to see whether you can use the experience to make a friend rather than an enemy . . . perhaps even a client.
 
@Ian Grant - Thank you. I this case it's commercial use. So I'll probably go down the invoice route maybe giving them 14 days to pay after which the amount gets hiked by X%.
@AnalogueWendy Thank you. THB I am not really interested in the sort of work they could offer particularly as they are in London. My days of schlepping up to London, paying congestion charges, ULEZ (my vehicles too old) and crawling around at >20mph in between red traffic lights that allow only 4 cars thru at a time are in the past. Sorry, that was a bit of a moan
