Wet Scanning Fluid Alternative

Am I missing something? The Epson mount seems to be around £95, whereas the ’Better Scanning’ one is a bit cheaper at $90.Of course there would be shipping and import costs.

I use the Epson one, I have tried the better scanning one but prefer the Epson one for both wet and dry scanning

Understood, Iain. I got myself confused because folks seemed to be suggesting that the 'Better Scanning' mount might be multiples more than the Epson.

After hours of testing including the tedious adjustment screws on the better scanning holder, the Epson wet mount holder sits 3mm above the glass and seems to be the optimum height for 120 and 5x4.

I lay the negatives emulsion side down in the middle and then place a piece of picture frame anti-glare glass on top and make a hinge using tape.

Ian. Is the Epson Wet Mount for the V800 the same model that is used for the V700/V750? I ask because I think I may have located a one for a reasonable price.

Excellent. Amazon had one in their warehouse with a 'small area of cosmetic damage' for a tad over £30. Now I just need to source either your glass, or some mylar sheets.

With both the V7xx and V8xx scanners, they have 2 lenses, one for media mounted direct onto the scanner glass and one for media placed in a film holder. When using the wet mount holder it is important to make sure you select "Film Holder" in the scanning software in order for the correct lens to be made active.

The lens for the film holder has a scan area of 5.9 inches across x 9.74 inches down which is why I put the negative in the middle of the wet mount holder so I get full coverage.

Regarding the Mylar sheets, they are available from here https://surrey-inkjet-company.co.uk/store/scanning/
For the fluid, Kami Fluid is what is reccommended but I have used Ronson Lighter fluid in the past with no issues.

Thanks for the source for mylar. I'd been looking at Gamsol as fluid since this seems more economical than the Kami: https://www.russellandchapple.co.uk/index.php/gamblin-gamsol-mineral-sprit.html

Yikes - thise mylars are expensive. Are these the ones? https://surrey-inkjet-company.co.uk/product/mylar-scanning-sheets-210-x-297-a4/

Again, I was thinking of trying some Copier OHP Clear Acetate Film in place of Mylar https://www.amazon.co.uk/Laser-Copi...1_5?keywords=ohp+sheets&qid=1576189534&sr=8-5

Thanks again. Can you re-use the mylar sheets or is it a use-once-and-discard item?

I have been using Gamsol for a little while now. I am reasonably happy with the scans. But the Gamsol does feel a little 'oily'. Indeed, the plastic surround on my wet scan mount has little shiny spots where it has come into contact with the Gamsol.

Does the Kami fluid also have this oily feel?

That's helpful. I think I'll get hold of some Kami, then. If it's the same as the Gamsol then I will eventually use both up. If it's significantly less oily I'll switch and chalk it up to experience.

The Kami fluid has arrived and I had the chance to test it out. To cut to the chase, I will be ditching the Gamsol.

There was no feeling of oiliness with the Kami fluid. On trying a few drops of fluid on the skin, the Kami dried very quickly and left no impression of residue. The Gamsol took significantly longer to dry and left a greasy feeling (as if one had applied moisturiser). The scanning process seemed more straightforward too - it was much easier to eliminate small air bubbles with the Kami flui compared to the Gamsol. And once done scanning, the negative dried very quickly - seconds as opposed to having to pin it back up to dry with the Gamsol.

Hope this helps people who may be considering wet scanning fluid alternatives.

When I got my better scanning glass I got some blank black Mylar sheets. I’ve miss placed them and need some more sheets. Any suggestions on a source or good substitute?
