Whitby Piers - Abbey - Church

On this day, I have never seen so many people congregating on the west pier and at the time of making the exposure I was not sure whether it was going to turn out due to the vibrations beneath my feet.

Whitby is such an amazing place to go, great image Ian!

I'd like to take the camera a littlebit higher so the level of the pier comes down a little.
Could this be done only by rising the lens or would I need a larger tripod?

Raising the lens would reduce the foreground and increase the sky. It would raise the viewpoint a little, so that a bit more of the top of the piers would be visible and the left-hand (as viewed) lighthouse would move a little further down from the Abbey above it. All this would be very small. Front rise (from their website) on a Chamonix is 70mm, or about 2½". If any rise is already applied (Ian doesn't say) this would be lessened.
I suspect that the effect would mostly be on the framing. A bigger tripod and a small stepladder would be needed for a radical change. Jem Southam sometimes carries a stepladder.
All this assumes that Ian agrees with your diagnosis. We have no reason to suppose he is not happy with the shot as it is.

I had to use some front rise to clear some railings, in fact I used quite a bit of it.

The lighthouse was open but there was a lot of people going up there and its very narrow when you get to the top. Once up there you could just get a tripod setup with a 5x4 on top.

Nice shot, and how well Pyrocat HD copes

I've not been that side of the estuary, I'd like to use my 6x17 camera in Whitby, there's some great ruin on the banks that I've only shot from the flyover. It's time to revisit Parking is so offensively expensive almost central London rates. . . . . . .
