I also think Fomapan 400 will be a nice choice of film stock for this set up when things get brighter and what will you be using as a shutter?
Hey Ian,Interesting Nas.
You realise how shallow DOF is when focussing lenses like this, despite being f9, I have a 20" (500mm) RR and that is similar. It actually makes focussing easier.
It's still noticeable with say a 12" (300mm) f6.8 Dagor, far less so with a 300mm f9 Nikkor M. However with my 300mm f4.5 Xenar the difference in aperture makes is way easier to find critical focus.
The downside of longer lenses is even stopped down to f22 or even f32 there's still little DOF, better for 3/4 or full length portraits.

The box has 100 printed on it. X-ray film is UV sensitive so the ISO doesn't directly transfer to panchromatic film ratings. Light meters don't measure UV light either which makes things tricky. I rated the film at ISO 160 because that's the ISO I landed on after testing some other x-ray film recently which I developed in HC-110. The film expired in 2020 but I've kept it cool.Nas, out of curiosity, what is the official iso rating of the X-ray film?
What did you rate it at for this test?
And what do you believe is the true iso now, after expiry?
That’s the one. I can only put my under exposure down to lack of enough UV light. I used an LED panel for two sheets and a portable strobe for two sheets. The strobe shots were rated at ISO 160 but they’re too thin. I’m getting ISO 160 from some other x- ray film I’ve got which I think might be repackaged Agfa.Don't know if this is exactly the same X ray film I have but mine works out at 100 ISO using Fuji HR-U green (the green sensitive one)
Hey Ian,
Didn't you say you haven't used your 20" (500mm) lens? I need to test out my 300mm f4.5 Xenar – thanks for the reminder. It came with a triple extension Wista 10x8 I've since sold but I held onto the lens. I've also got a Plaubel Anticomar 300mm f/4.2 but I haven't used that in many years so I can't remember how much easier that is to focus.
Some info on the Anticomar lens I have: https://apenasimagens.com/en/anticomar-plaubel-2/
I got mine from the US from www.cxsonline.com seems OK, I've got nearly 300 sheets of the stuff. I don't think I was stung with any import duty somehow.I had the 20" RR mounted on my 12"x10" camera, and also on one of my Agfa Ansco 10"x8" camera. So I play around occasionally, comparing lenses, working out how best to use them. I could do with a mannequin, and finally finishing restoring my 12"x10" plate holders.
They will be used fairly soon, where do you buy your X-ray film.

That's where I got mine but it was some years ago.I got mine from the US from www.cxsonline.com seems OK, I've got nearly 300 sheets of the stuff. I don't think I was stung with any import duty somehow.
