I keep a separate release on each LF lens ready to go. However they keep failing off from one session to the next. Why don't they stay down on the threads?

16 cable releases in total A mixed job lot, some heavier plastic covered, others braided metal, one double release, various lengths from 20 - 100cm,

Long cable releases are useful when shooting portraits with a 10x8 camera with longer focal length lenses. I have a 17½" TT&H & a 20" unknown lenses. I have a few front mounting shutters.

I do the same Alan......i am considering using non-setting threadlock, but not gotten around to it yet.

I'm always losing them Alan, maybe because if out in thee field I carry my campers on their tripods. Cable releases shake loose, and some screw in better than others.

The older screw thread Leica type were probably better, only early Yashica TLRs used the same screw on fitting that I know of). A downside on the Leica's was you had to unscrew a collar first, easily lost. Another more secure cable release is those for Sinar Copal shutters, while essentially the same thread as modern cable releases there's no taper, and they screw in deeper and

Old W, Watson & Sons adverts show a wide range of cable releases of different end fit, their "Antinous " Shutter Release. Initially made to replace the pneumatic balloon release of TP shutters. This is a 1915 advert.



Bausch & Lomb and the early Deckel (partnership) Compound shutters used pneumatic piston releases. The big switch to the modern cable releases was when a new Deckel company was formed in 1911/2 to manufacture the Compur. Zeiss had bought the rights to Deckel's ex partner's Patent for the Compur gear train. The new Deckel company was formed by Zeiss,, F Deckel, A Gauthier (AGC/Prontor), B&L, etc.

A benefit was both major European shutter manufacturers, Deckel & Gauthier, had been set up by ex Zeiss engineers, so their shutter mounting threads were standardised. Aside from shutters both companies made machine tooling for Zeiss.

Finally a conclusion. I picked up both of these cables on eBay last week so this chapter is closed. Quality compared to what I was using is night and day.

I actually had 3 of these at one time, and I broke 2 of them (in my case by leaving them attached to lenses). So be warned they are not indestructible!
